The future of family medicine relies on our students. The ACFP works with dedicated physicians to help students learn more about Family Medicine as a career choice. ACFP is pleased to plan and present the following Student Initiatives:
Stop by the ACFP booth during Student Orientation Day to meet and learn what the ACFP can do for you.

Student Information Sessions at the University of Alberta
Once a year the ACFP organizes a student-family physician meet and greet luncheon or dinner. The event provides a great opportunity for students to meet and speak with practising family physicians. The informal setting is the perfect place for students to ask doctors the really tough questions.
Share Your Passion for Family Medicine and Volunteer at Our Student Information Sessions.
The Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) will be hosting an evening information session for first- and second-year medical students at the University of Alberta on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 5:15pm. We are looking for volunteers located from communities in northern Alberta, including Red Deer.
ACFP’s Student Information Sessions at the University of Alberta
5:15pm – 8pm, Tuesday, October 30, 2018 (dinner will be provided)
Katz Centre for Pharmacy and Health at the University of Alberta
How It Works
A physician and/or resident will be assigned a room with a small group students (approximately eight to 10 students/group) for dinner. This will provide an opportunity for medical students to meet with family physicians and residents in an informal, relaxed, and interactive manner to ask questions about careers in family practice and/or family medicine residency. There is no set agenda and the discussion will be based on the questions the students have for you. All we request is that you share with students your perspective about and passion for family medicine.
Why We Need You
Evaluations from previous sessions have been very positive and this event helps to develop student awareness about the scope, diversity, and benefits of choosing a career in family practice.

Our members have a long history of sharing their knowledge with keen students, like you. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity when you shadow a family doctor around. Learn what their day is really like and get a sense of how you can affect people’s lives. Program invitations are sent to incoming medical students in conjunction with the students’ acceptance packages for medical school.
Thank you to all the students and family physicians who participated in the 2017 Incoming Medical Student Shadowing Program. The ACFP’s Shadowing Program provides incoming medical students with a positive and genuine understanding of the scope of family medicine before starting their formal medical education and being exposed to other medical specialties. The 2017 program was successful in pairing 88% of first year medical students with family physicians—representing a 30% increase over 2016—matching 80 students (versus 68 in 2016) overall.
Student Leadership Nominations!
Are you the Student of the Year? Don’t miss your chance to get involved and possibly receive a cash award of $500.00. The 2018 Award Program deadline is April 15, 2018.
