What does the College do?
The College is a non-profit voluntary
organization of family physicians that
makes continuing medical education (CME)
mandatory for its members. The CFPC is
recognized worldwide. Members attend
superior CME training workshops and
maintain high standards of care in
general practice across Canada.
Is the Alberta College of Family
Physicians (ACFP) the licensing body for
physicians practicing in Alberta?
No. The ACFP is often confused with
the College of Physicians and Surgeons
of Alberta. For information on
licensing requirements for physicians
practicing in Alberta, please contact
CPSA.
What is CCFP?
CCFP stands for Certificant of the
College of Family Physicians. This
designation is granted upon successful
completion of the CFPC Certification
Examination in Family Medicine and
maintaining the Continuing Medical
Education (CME/CPD) criteria.
What is MCFP?
MCFP stands for Member of the
College of Family Physicians. Members
of the CFPC who meet the Continuing
Medical Education (CME/CPD) criteria,
but have not written the Certification
examination, may use this designation.
What is FCFP?
Fellowship shall be conferred
upon Certificant members who have
successfully maintained their
Certification for ten consecutive years,
including 25 MAINPRO C credits per five
year cycle, as part of their educational
activities. To maintain Fellowship,
members must continue to fulfill their
maintenance of certification
requirements - i.e. 250 credits every 5
years - of which 25 credits must
be MAINPRO C.
How do I become a member of the
College of Family Physicians of Canada?
Membership in the CFPC is available
to all qualified and licensed medical
practitioners engaged in general family
practice. Membership is dependent upon
completing the equivalent of 50 hours of
continuing medical education each year
and full payment of the membership fee.
National and provincial membership fees
are compulsory for members. To submit
an application for membership in the
College, please contact
CFPC.
What are the membership fees?
New members joining the College
between February 1, 2008 and December
31, 2009 will receive a 50% discount for
the first two years of their membership.
Returning members are eligible for this
discount if membership was discontinued
prior to July 1, 2008. For other fee
information, please contact
CFPC.
I earned my CCFP in the past, but
have not maintained my membership in the
CFPC. Can I rejoin the CFPC and have my
CCFP reinstated?
Yes, certification (CCFP) can be
reinstated for former certificants who
renew their membership in the CFPC, and
submit 100 Mainpro credits
(minimum of 50 M1 and/or MC and the
balance M2) earned over a consecutive
2-year period leading up to the time of
rejoining the CFPC or within 2 years of
having rejoined.
What are my options to obtain my CCFP
designation?
There are two options to obtain the
CCFP designation - Alternative Route to
Certification (ARC) and Certification
through Examination. Please contact
CFPC
for more information.
Can I obtain MAINPRO® credits as a
Family Medicine Resident?
Yes, if your program is taken
outside of a regular academic program.
