FAQ's

What does the College do?
The College is a non-profit voluntary organization of family physicians that makes continuing medical education (CME) mandatory for its members.  The CFPC is recognized worldwide.  Members attend superior CME training workshops and maintain high standards of care in general practice across Canada.

Is the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) the licensing body for physicians practicing in Alberta?
No.  The ACFP is often confused with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.  For information on licensing requirements for physicians practicing in Alberta, please contact CPSA.

What is CCFP?
CCFP stands for Certificant of the College of Family Physicians.  This designation is granted upon successful completion of the CFPC Certification Examination in Family Medicine and maintaining the Continuing Medical Education (CME/CPD) criteria.

What is MCFP?
MCFP stands for Member of the College of Family Physicians.  Members of the CFPC who meet the Continuing Medical Education (CME/CPD) criteria, but have not written the Certification examination, may use this designation.

What is FCFP?
Fellowship shall be conferred upon Certificant members who have successfully maintained their Certification for ten consecutive years, including 25 MAINPRO C credits per five year cycle, as part of their educational activities. To maintain Fellowship, members must continue to fulfill their maintenance of certification requirements - i.e. 250 credits every 5 years - of which 25 credits must be MAINPRO C.

How do I become a member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada?
Membership in the CFPC is available to all qualified and licensed medical practitioners engaged in general family practice.  Membership is dependent upon completing the equivalent of 50 hours of continuing medical education each year and full payment of the membership fee.  National and provincial membership fees are compulsory for members.  To submit an application for membership in the College, please contact CFPC

What are the membership fees?
New members joining the College between February 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009 will receive a 50% discount for the first two years of their membership.  Returning members are eligible for this discount if membership was discontinued prior to July 1, 2008.  For other fee information, please contact CFPC.

I earned my CCFP in the past, but have not maintained my membership in the CFPC.  Can I rejoin the CFPC and have my CCFP reinstated?
Yes, certification (CCFP) can be reinstated for former certificants who renew their membership in the CFPC, and submit 100 Mainpro credits (minimum of 50 M1 and/or MC and the balance M2) earned over a consecutive 2-year period leading up to the time of rejoining the CFPC or within 2 years of having rejoined.

What are my options to obtain my CCFP designation?
There are two options to obtain the CCFP designation - Alternative Route to Certification (ARC) and Certification through Examination.  Please contact CFPC for more information.

Can I obtain MAINPRO® credits as a Family Medicine Resident?
