Program Accreditation

IMPORTANT! CHANGES TO THE MAINPRO® CONFLICT OF INTEREST DISCLOSURE POLICY

  • A Conflict of Interest may occur in situations where the personal and professional interest of individuals may have actual potential or apparent influence over their judgment and actions.
  • CME/CPD event organizers and presenters must take steps that would allow participants to make independent judgments on the relationship identified and management strategies employed to deal with any conflicts of interest.
  • The purpose of identifying and addressing potential conflicts of interest is to ensure proper balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor for educational activities.

Effective March 18, 2013, all Mainpro programs must use a 3-step Conflict of Interest (CoI) process. This requirement is effective regardless of your program accreditation date.

CME/CPD event organizers and presenters must take steps that would allow participants to make independent judgments on the relationships identified and management strategies employed to deal with any conflicts of interest. Instructions on implementing this policy are located in the Quick Tips Guide to Conflict of Interest. At the start of each activity accredited by the CFPC, program facilitators must present a three-slide conflict of interest declaration.  

Effective June 1, 2012 the CFPC extended the requirement of Conflict of Interest disclosure to include Planning Committee members.

All presenters and members of planning committees MUST complete the CFPC’s Mainpro Declaration of Conflict of Interest form. A completed form for each planning committee member MUST be submitted at the time of application for accreditation. Completed COI forms from other organizations will not be accepted for the purpose of the application. Failure to attach completed forms to your application at the time of submission may cause your application to be rejected. It is your responsibility as the program/session provider to ensure the CoI disclosure occurs in accordance to these new policies. You must ensure the faculty/speakers/presenters are aware of these changes and understand the importance of this requirement.

What is the CoI requirement when applying to the Alberta College of Family Physicians?

  1. Program Applications (Content Approval) The new CoI slides for the presenter/speaker and completed CoI forms for planning committee members are to be included with the original application for accreditation. If the speaker’s name or information is not known at the time of application submission, template slides may be submitted to identify the intent to use the new CoI slides and how the information will be later presented. However, the CoI form for each planning committee member MUST be submitted at the time of application.
  2. Ethical Review Submissions (Assignment of Final Accreditation)  If the new CoI slides (i.e. 3 slides) were not submitted for the presenter/speaker of your session, with the original program application, then they MUST be submitted to the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) office at the time of the ethical review submission. Information on these slides must be completed by the presenter/speaker.

Note: The presenter/speaker CoI form does not need to be submitted at the time of application for approval and/or ethical review. Completed forms for all presenters/speakers are required and must be retained by the CME/CPD organizer or provider. Accreditation and Support Statements

Please ensure that all documents/templates for approved programs are in compliance with the CFPC’s guidelines, and are using correct statements. Statements are noted in the CFPC’s A Guide To Mainpro Accreditation(Appendix 9); have been circulated in the CFPC’s CPD In-Focus Newsletter (most recently in the Winter 2011/12 edition); and are included in the body of each QuickConnect email message granting program approval and/or final accreditation.

Program Approval/Accreditation and Support Statements

Prior to final accreditation through ethical review process:

  • This program has been reviewed by The College of Family Physicians of Canada and is awaiting final accreditation by the College’s [insert province here] Chapter.

Once Chapter office has provided notice of final accreditation (following successful ethical review):

  • This program has been accredited by The College of Family Physicians of Canada and the ____Chapter for up to ___Mainpro-M1 credits.

Support Statement (effective April 1, 2011)

  • This program was supported in part by an educational grant from [insert organization name(s)].

The use of incorrect statements results in delays of the accreditation process.

Effective July 1, 2012

ETHICAL REVIEW SUBMISSIONS TO THE ALBERTA CHAPTER WHICH INCLUDE INCORRECT STATEMENTS BEING USED FOR PROGRAMS WHERE INDIVIDUALS HAVE PREVIOUSLY BEEN ADVISED BY OUR OFFICE OF THE USE OF INCORRECT CFPC STATEMENTS, WILL FAIL THE REVIEW AND REQUIRE RESUBMISSION UNDER A NEW ETHICAL REVIEW APPLICATION. General Information for CPD Providers and Planners

The ACFP accredits provincial continuing medical education (CME) and continuing professional development (CPD) activities for MAINPRO®-M1 credit. We do so through our dedicated staff and experienced CPD reviewers.  Provincial Mainpro-M1 accreditation is only valid in the province where the program has been submitted and approved.  For information on eligibility criteria for a Mainpro-M1 event or program, refer to Your Guide to Mainpro Accreditation.

QuickConnect is the CFPC’s online application system. Applying online allows you to complete the application form, upload documents, provide payment information quickly and efficiently, and receive updates on the status of your application.

Getting Started

Tips on using QuickConnect

  • Ensure that the family physician who has had substantial involvement in the development of the program is a member of the CFPC. You will be asked to provide their CFPC membership number. *Note:  Physicians who are non-member Mainpro participants are not eligible to fulfill this criteria on the application form.
  • The email address of the CFPC member recorded on the application form must match the email address that is on file with the CFPC.  Using a different email address will prevent your application from moving forward.
  • Payment by credit card (MC, Amex, VISA) allows your application to be processed immediately. Using the payment option of invoice/cheque, will delay the review of your application until payment is received by QuickConnect at the national CFPC office.

The ACFP will still accept paper-based applications, but strongly encourages all providers to use the online accreditation program, QuickConnect. If you wish to apply using the paper-based application, please contact the ACFP office at 780-488-2395 to receive a copy of the form.

Review Process

Program approval and accreditation is a two-step process.

Step 1– Program Review

All submitted applications and supporting documents are reviewed by one of our experienced CPD reviewers to ensure adherence to established criteria and policies, including relevance of content to family physicians.  Reviewers may: 1) ask for changes; 2) approve; or 3) reject the submission.

Approval notice will be sent to the CPD Provider.

IMPORTANT!  Confirmation of approval of program content does not confer final accreditation being granted.  Each time a session of the approved program is held, an ethical review must be completed (see Step 2 – Ethical Review). *Note:  Some activities are exempt from ethical review.  Exemptions include:

  • Online programs with no industry involvement with logistics (e.g. food/beverage, venue)
  • Journal Clubs or Regularly Scheduled Series (RSS) are not subject to session-by-session ethical review.  Instead, a single ethical review should be completed and submitted outlining the venue, approximate costs and other details.  However, if presentations are arranged and/or paid for by external agencies, ethical reviews are required.

Step 2 – Ethical Review

Final accreditation is contingent upon the ethical review being submitted and accepted.  An Ethical review ensures that the focus of Mainpro-accredited CME/CPD remains on addressing the educational needs of family physicians—and not on ancillary benefits such as meals, entertainment and monetary rewards.  An Ethical review also ensures compliance of the following with CFPC accreditation standards and guidelines for ethical conduct as outlined by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Guidelines for Physicians in Interaction with Industry (2007) and the Rx&D Code of Ethical Practices (2012):

  • Promotional materials, including invitations and correspondence with potential attendees, and all other published announcements (websites, blogs, etc.)
  • Session and/or event agenda
  • Session location or venue, meals and entertainment or social events
  • Additional materials provided to participants/potential participants (course syllabus, promotional flyers, email messages, web site links, certificate of completion, etc.)

Submission of Attendance Records and Evaluation forms

Effective July 15, 2012, the ACFP will require providers to submit a copy of the attendance records/sign in sheets, and individually completed evaluation forms for all provincial Mainpro M1 approved programs/sessions to our office within 10 business days post program completion.
